Laura Bateman | An International Champion of Gymnastics and Movement for People with Disabilities (GMPD) British GMPD Champion for five years running. Olympic Torch Bearer – Laura Bateman was chosen for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the 2004 Olympic Torch Relay on June 26th 2004. Laura was one of 140 torchbearers who carried the Olympic Flame along the 48 km route from Wimbledon through to central London. Laura was born with a congenital dislocation of her right hip and after several attempts to correct it through surgery she was left with approximately 70% loss of movement in her hip and a 4 cm shortening of her right leg. Despite this Laura was a dedicated gymnast training more than 20 hours per week at Coalville Gymnastics Club, travelling 70 miles a day five days a week.
